Underwatering

Too little water makes plants wilt, crisp at the edges and drop leaves, flowers and fruit.

Also known as: Drought stress, Dry soil

Symptoms and identification

Drooping leaves that recover after watering, dry crispy leaf edges and tips, yellow lower leaves, and flower or fruit drop. In pots, the soil shrinks away from the sides and water runs straight through.

Causes

Hot, windy weather, small pots that dry out quickly, root-bound plants, and missed waterings. Very dry potting mix can repel water instead of absorbing it.

Organic treatment

Soak very dry pots in a bucket of water for 20–30 minutes until bubbles stop, then let them drain. Trim crispy leaves and keep the plant out of strong sun for a few days while it recovers.

Prevention

Check pots daily in summer, group them together and mulch the soil surface. Move plants into larger pots and use a mix with cocopeat or compost to hold moisture.

Chemical treatment (use with care)

Not needed.
