Flea beetles

Tiny, shiny jumping beetles that pepper the leaves of brassicas, radishes and aubergines with small holes.

Also known as: Phyllotreta, Shot-hole beetles

Symptoms and identification

Leaves are covered in small round holes, like shotgun damage. Tiny black or striped beetles jump away when disturbed. Seedlings can be killed.

Causes

Flea beetles are most active in warm, dry weather in spring and early summer.

Organic treatment

Use yellow sticky traps, water seedlings regularly, and spray neem oil. Plants usually outgrow damage once established.

Prevention

Cover seedlings with fine insect netting, keep the soil moist, and sow when plants will grow quickly.

Chemical treatment (use with care)

Use an insecticide labelled for flea beetles on that crop if seedlings are at risk.
